Stargate SG-1. Not influencing Marathon, of course, but perhaps influenced by? The Ancients remind me of the Jjaro in many ways. One example being that they dissapear entirely from the Galaxy (though it's revealed later on that they dissapeared from the UNIVERSE), leaving behind military and civilian tech on grand scales. It's revealed later one that the ancients 'ascended' or surpassed their mortality. They became, in as litteral of a term as it can get, gods, to the point of there being an evil faction who desire the worship and fear of the lower beings, because it gives them power, and a benevolent faction that just wants to leave the humans alone. This brings up an interesting idea of its own: Perhaps the W'rkncacanter isn't another species, but perhaps instead, another faction? It would definitely explain why the Jjaro and the W'rkncacanter are evenly matched. But it's a theory without evidence, and only an interesting alternative... Or is it? I've got to do other things besides sit on the story page for 16 hours today, I start my last semester of high school tomorrow.
