| Forerunner Symbols on Halo -- Language | |

Hi everyone! I'm a big lurker on the fringes out here. I've a Bungie addict since the first marathon. I've made a few submissions to the story page, but Finn suggested this one go out for discussion. Enjoy! --- I think the symbols that appear on the Halo (forerunner) and on Covenant materials are incredibly easy to figure out. I think we're suffering from a case of being to close to the forest.. blah blah. To draw an allegory, consider the Chinese Language. While being both pronounced by stroke of the pen, a large part of their language also LOOKS like what it's supposed to be. Take the word "house" for example.. looks LIKE a house. There are many of these in chinese. Another allegory would be Hebrew. Not only does it function as a language, it is also their numerical system. Not only that, words which derive from others, also make sums of the words in a numerical sense. It's a VERY advanced thought process to say the least. Getting back on point, If you examine the symbols as language, do they not look like what they are describing? The lift symbol LOOKS like a lift. Maybe the orientation tells you which way it goes? Thats for others to decide. The ones near Flood rooms look like two things that would be VERY obvious. http://halo.bungie.org/story/forerunner/3s.gif This pic shows the two. On the right, this one could very easily and handily mean. "Containment Area" or "Flood Containment Area" The left could mean "Do not open -- Contamination Warning" or something along those lines. It looks like air wafting into a decompression chamber.. (hence contamination) or something "flooding" into another room. Also, the colors could have some signifigance, a pronunciation or punctuation of some sort. Red meaning warning or something like that. I think that is a very reasonable explanation for those. http://halo.bungie.org/story/forerunner/9s.gif For the grenade one (yellow, on right) that looks a lot like the blast radius of a grenade, no? I think it's reasonable to go out on a limb and say that maybe this is left over ordinance from the Forerunner days and they are still marked by the forerunners. Another theory is, since the covenant took the technology and adapted it.. religiously they still put the symbol on the grenade... blessing it maybe? Food for thought. That also correlates to the other symbol on this.. the one which appears on the back of the Elites. This could very well be jibberish which the Elites have no idea as to the meaning of, only taking it because they see it in certain areas that are powerful, forerunner installations? How many people are running around with Chinese writing on them, taking someone's word as to what it means... more to the point... how many religious warriors wear symbols of their religion on their gear? (Crusaders had crosses on their gear...) The reason that some symbols look alike may be that they are similar words, meanings or "spellings"... but related. Go on to any military installation and how many times do you see "U.S. Army" on everything or writing describing the object? This set is also interesting... http://halo.bungie.org/story/forerunner/5s.gif The one on the far left puzzles me a bit... can't figure that one out. The second from left looks like the containment symbol.. so maybe it opens a door? It's also blue, not Red, like above. It's safe to open this door.. not the Flood's, though. Maybe blue is control, Red is a warning. The third looks like the decompression one from above. Maybe it opens doors to the outside world or operates locks. (like in a prison.. which halo is, of sorts.) It's also blue... (see above.) The fourth looks also puzzles me a bit. well, more food for thought... digest that one for a bit. *I* know the tru7h!
