Areas like that seem to have a predefined height that : automatically kills the player. my experience has been that you can fall to various depths, dying only at the progammed fall time, rather than a predefined height. i've gotten down as far as just barely above the first level of geometry (looks like the green grassy areas), which floats above the other "watery" level. this was during a death fall, and is the lowest i fell before the scene reset to saved. in all cases it seemed not the depth of the MC during the fall but the time from the start of unsupported falling, e.g., getting the hog to flat spin a bit while falling did seem to extend the death point by keeping the MC in the seat a bit longer. it is possible i never made it far enough down to hit the "absolute death limit" depth, though.
