In Response To: How to make an alien language ... (Jester)
: I can just imagine Marty sitting in Redmond while under pressure trying to
: come up with an alien language quickly and finally just going "Screw
: it! We'll use Sarge's voice in reverse!"
heheh... Finally the secret is out! Ironically this was less a "screw it" decision and more what came out of the marine speech development. For some time during development we had the sarge and pvt. jenkins as placeholder for the elite and grunt respectively except everything was forwards. There was some good laughs at that time as the elite would tell you "Sit DOWN B*tch" and the grunt "The Sarge is wasted...lets go!". Two things that came out of that time were that we liked hearing the grunts in english (hence Joe's session to record more grunty appropriate speech) and that we really liked the color of Scully's voice pitched down and understanding it was not as important as understanding the grunt. How many of us appreciate chucking a grenade around a corner and hearing a grunt say "leader dead...run away!" and knowing you can charge in and mop up. Sooo with that in mind we took some pieces of Scully's speech reversed and pitched down and tried to match up inflections with the various AI states in which we wanted the elite to talk. Adam Tews did a lot of that work and he did a great job finding good snippets that didn't sound too reversed. Hey we fooled ya for a while!!
Cheers, JAY
