I don't believe the Forerunners got kicked around (extinct-ified) by the Covenant. If the Forerunners could build a incomprehensibly complex world with vast unimaginable destructive powers then they would've squashed the Covenant like the little crustaceans they are.

If the Covenant are struggling against the human race (or if it's at least a pretty close match) then there is no way they could even begin to think about beating the world builders, Forerunners.

No, I believe that the Forerunners blew it themselves by overlooking something (like the off/on switch at the Flood incubator factory) or that they're still around on one of the six other Halos.
