Was it? I always thought it was completely fabricated. I suppose ol' Rod the Mod could've had his stomach pumped for a drug overdose and the legend took root from that. Snopes (http://www.snopes2.com/music/artists/rockstar.htm) seems to take the position that the story's been around forever and is applied to whomever is popular at the time. Just think - 20 years from now, breakfast table gross-outs will start out with "Hey! Remember that story about the Backstreet Boys?"
