Actually I was hoping the ending would be even more apocalyptic.

There was a decent amount of variety to the game but there's way too many good guy happy endings out there.

My fav sotries (actually anime for the most part) are those where they used to wipe out the majority of the cast and leave the rest emotionally crippled and longing for death.

And if you've read much/any of the IA Banks stuff, cited as an inspiration at one point, or even Steakley's Armor, another inspiration, you'll know that the end for Halo could've been a lot more apocalyptic.
