Hahaha, I've got a gameplay story to tell
Posted By: Skeletor <skeletor02@lycos.com>Date: 11/21/01 5:08 a.m.

I'm playing Flawless Cowboy (the second level) on Legendary after beating the game earlier tonight on Normal (woohoo!), I just reached the first Marine survivors (who were promptly slaughtered by the Covenant who had just invaded the area via dropship. The Marines really have no chance against the Covenant on Legendary, their AI seems to stay constant throughout the difficulties), after respawning a few hundred times I made it up the only artificial structure in the area. With only two entrances, both long ramps, easily guarded from above, it is a choice position. It's a very high structure, and it's easy to shoot down at the Covenant while taking time to recharge my shields when I need to.

So I camp the ramp on the side of the structure the majority of Covenant are located and pick the Grunts off as they try to raid me. A few minutes later all the Grunts are dead, a few red and blue Elites are hiding in the rocks below me and I try to snipe them with my pistol, my Assault Rifle is basically useless against them at this distance, not to mention a whole clip of fully-automatic fire at point-blank range only takes down their shields. They keep dodging behind rocks until their shields recharge and there's too many of them for me to take down with only a pistol and grenades. They've got an efficient stream of suppressive plasma-fire on me and I'm running out of ammo fast. They start to advance on my position and I'm forced to camp the ramp again.

I then find how incredibly useful the Needler is. Up until now I've barely ever used it. Well guess what, This baby can take down a fully shielded Elite on Legendary in one freakkin clip if you're in range and have the targetting reticle directly over the target (The reticle will turn red).
God, this gun rules! The seconds between pumping an entire clip (I suppose it's not really a "clip", but what the hell) into an Elite and when the shards detonate is just so damn satisfying! And when the shards detonate, holy crap, the sounds and graphics and satisfaction to know that's ONE LESS COVENANT BASTARD YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH!! Well....suffice to say it just kicks ass.

So once I've finished with the Elites two Covenant dropships land on the opposite side of the structure and I rush to the other ramp, this time there's some Jackals among the Grunts and Elites, I try to nail a few of them before they know where I am, they discover me pretty quickly and I'm forced back into camping the ramp. I nail a few Grunts who rush in first and suddenly I hear the most frightening sound I've heard in the past few days, a disgruntled Elite, only a few feet behind me.

A portion of the Covenant forces must have gone around the other side of the structure and raided the opposite ramp before I knew it. I turn to find it's a Red elite staring me in the face, there's a few grunts behind it and I know I'm dead (or so I think) so I jump off the side of the structure and make a break for it across the countryside. Surprisingly I make it away alive, but Cortana tells me I can't leave the area until the Covenant are eliminated (For reasons I will not say due to minor spoilers).

I carefully make my way back to the area, and spot the Covenant at the crest of a hill about 50 meters from my postion. There's at least 20-25 of them, mostly grunts and jackals, about 6-7 Elites. They obviously know where I am because they're moving around sporadically, looking in my direction, and taking cover behind things.
Something struck me as odd though, they weren't shooting at me. I zoom in with my pistol and nail a few Grunts, they're still not shooting at me, or advancing at all!

It was then I realised I had found a way to exploit the AI!

Chris Butcher once said (On the HBO forum) that the AI on Legendary is set to a more defensive behavior due to their ability to seriously kick your ass if they just charge you.
Therefore I can only assume that I was just out of shooting range, and just under the range at which they advance.

Anyways to make a long story.....longer, I have 39 rounds left for my pistol, and even less for my needler. I take down a group of Grunts, keeping my distance. I'm down to one clip with my pistol, I move a little closer and fire off some controlled bursts of molten glass-shards, taking a few more of the Cov's down. I run out of ammo for my Needler. I have one pistol clip left and 3 Elites are still living. 3 Elites are freakkin impossible to take down with a clip of pistol ammo on legendary, and grenades don't do crap against them unless you're in a tight hallway where they can't dive to safety.

I couldn't give up now, my last checkpoint was way back at the beginning of this thread. In a last ditch effort I madly rush them throwing as many grenades as possible and unloading my pistol.

When everything was silent I couldn't fscking believe it, I was alive. My grenades had detonated a buttload of plasma grenades lying around on the ground that the Grunts I had killed earlier had dropped. All 3 elites WERE DEAD!! I HAD DEFEATED TWO FULLY-LOADED COVENANT DROPSHIPS ON LEGENDARY MODE WITH JUST A PISTOL, NEEDLER, AND A FEW GRENADES!!!WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
I just had to express my enthusiasm, gawd Halo rules. I'm going to finish the level, I'm about to get my Warthog ^_^
