Hmm. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of people that play Halo 4 won't really even think about it. The emblem is still essentially the same: a skull above a shield with two crossed swords. The changes they've made make sense in the context of a new trilogy. Same as when Bungie changed the emblem in ODST.
I'm also not sure "iconic" fits in the way you are trying to use it. "Emblematic" would be a much better word in the context of your argument. The Legendary emblem means something, it represents something, therefore it is emblematic. It is iconic because it has followed a certain style over the years. Because it is an iconic image Bungie was able to change things up a bit by using a human skull and two crossed guns in ODST, and 343i is able to do the same by using a Forerunner skull, and the symbol still has the same meaning, it still represents the same thing.

Now imagine the odd black and white emblem that we've seen in that context, with similar coloring and shadows.
I think it will look fine and it will fit in well with the tone of the new trilogy. Which is the whole point.
