The usefulness of the ME squadmates comes from their abilities. Their actual firefighting ability is pretty limited.

I've always thought that the solution for Noble Team would be to heavily script their combat. Instead of just having them be invulnerable Marines, give them all kinds of badass maneuvers like assassination, sneaking around, diving to and from cover, sticking grenades to enemies, and whatnot. Instead of having them look like idiots, this would make them look like Spartans. As far as the difficulty in the game is concerned? The player still has to deal with the Covenant, and the number of missions on which Noble 6 has no Spartan support would more than make up for any semblance of eez-mode for the missions with allies.
