I've grown to absolutely love it over the years. It's frenetic, balls-to-the-wall action. The Flood actually live up to their name in Halo 1, especially in The Library. They're just constantly pouring out of every vent and from around every corner. Like you said, they're constantly pushing you back and trying to overwhelm you with sheer numbers, and ammo management is key (using the Carrier Forms to your advantage was essential on Legendary). In Halo 2, you can just hack the Combat Forms up with sword as they attack you one at a time, and in Halo 3 shooting the Infection Forms in their chest with a BR as they slowly lumber towards you in small groups works well, as does burning them up or blasting them with dual plasma rifles. Halo 1's Flood was simply way more fun to fight.
