This seems to suggest that players actually want player progression, which many Halo players don't. It also assumes that what people want is necessarily beneficial; I would argue that this is questionable (albeit understandable) in general, but absolute madness when addiction mechanisms (like the skinner boxes in question) are involved.
Video game skinner boxes are absolutely nefarious mechanisms in this regard, since they work by redirecting frustration away from the game and toward the lack of reward that comes of not playing the game. In other words, even (and especially) if the system results in you having a horrible frustrating grind experience, there's a good chance you'll be supporting it wholeheartedly the whole way because you associate it with reward. I remember this happening to me, both (heavily) in my old MMORPG days and (very lightly) shortly after Reach came out; my intellectual opinion of Reach peaked at its most frustrating and unfun time for me.
