I'm not sure if obnoxious is the right word, but it sounds right). : This info was actually revealed at Halo Fest. (I'm pretty sure it was one of : the panels - though maybe it was somewhere else.) The terminal video was revealed-- its location wasn't. This is important because I was holding out hope the circumstances were otherwise, but it's about the worst version of what people made very good cases for: the message reaching the Pillar of Autumn while it was still well-staffed and fairly capable, which doesn't make any sense, why did no one do anything about this or even mention it? It's not so much a real break with canon as a retcon, but it's a retcon that without significant other changes doesn't fit. If it's before you get Cortana, she should have intercepted the message and told the MC and Keyes, and if it's after, she'd see it when you do and tell the captain-- and in either case I'd expect the MC to tell the captain if Cortana didn't for some strange reason, and I doubt there's only one console on the whole ship where that message could be seen so after any of these there would probably be a debriefing. I for one would appreciate elaboration from 343i on both these issues.
