: doesn't Mjolnir recycle waste water...? I figured it would be a bit more
: elegant about it, but... who knows?

Fair point, essentially he is wearing a still suit.

I think that 26th century technology could do much better than mechanically recycling water and CO2/O2. They could probably give him artificial organs.

I was thinking along the lines of photosynthesis - it captures photons and uses the captured energy to make high energy chemicals and to pump electrons across a cell membrane. This creates an electric charge differential which provides energy to synthesize ATP.

From Wikipedia:

In the light reactions, one molecule of the pigment chlorophyll absorbs one photon and loses one electron. This electron is passed to a modified form of chlorophyll called pheophytin, which passes the electron to a quinone molecule, allowing the start of a flow of electrons down an electron transport chain that leads to the ultimate reduction of NADP to NADPH. In addition, this creates a proton gradient across the chloroplast membrane; its dissipation is used by ATP synthase for the concomitant synthesis of ATP. The chlorophyll molecule regains the lost electron from a water molecule through a process called photolysis, which releases a dioxygen (O2) molecule. The overall equation for the light-dependent reactions under the conditions of non-cyclic electron flow in green plants is:
2 H2O + 2 NADP+ + 3 ADP + 3 Pi + light → 2 NADPH + 2 H+ + 3 ATP + O2

The point is that you don't need to bother with photons when you have a fusion reactor on your back which can easily supply the voltage difference to power ATP synthesis and the reduction of NADP.

Clever bioengineering and a low voltage power supply could recycle the Spartans' wastes in replacement or augmented kidneys and lungs (maybe liver as well).
