He didn't know where or what the Ark exactly was, and was apparently excluded from any access list to get into the Cartographer himself, which is why he had to "hack" (or perhaps blowtorch) his way in. : That's puzzling from a fictional standpoint...you'd think Reclaimers could : easily walk through. Then again, we know that in that building Guilty : Spark had come under scrutiny when accessing a Terminal so even Spark had : to hack the door. That may have been a recent change and not relected the : actual security of the cartographer building normally. Perhaps Forerunners are admins, and Reclaimers are super-users. They're permitted access to the rings in order to fire them if needed, but not to the Ark and the foundry. I don't know. There's not much to go on in this area. : Form a gameplay standpoint, locked doors allows room for exposition, : deliberate pathing, pace, and so on. We might not be able to find a : pleasing fictional explanation, but I can understand a few gameplay : reasons for the locked doors. You could always fly in to the cartographer : itself from the waterfall side unobstructed. Across a loading zone? Never. :) Thing is, when faced with the need for a loading zone, Halo uses a lot of various techniques. Locked doors are only one of them. I think they chose a locked door here because it made sense to use one, and they went to the trouble to explain that 343 wasn't just opening the door, he was forcing it-- meaning even he was not supposed to be permitted entry, and once inside the light bridge area, the Chief's interaction was also required. Of course, that doesn't mean they can't paint themselves into corners. After all, why does the Chief's touch activate the bridge, but not the door?
