Not increased draw distance. They could have done what they did with clouds on the horizon and place mountain there. It was not a technical hurdle. The farthest thing away was the ring itself and we could see that just fine.

Why does it bother me? Beyond my usual tech-headedness, one of my initial playthroughs showed the Pelican flying into an island and having traveled around it, I took note back then that I could see the ring but no land. I recall remarking to myself this place is really isolated.

Now, apparently, my 8 year old memory is shot on that particular detail.

We just see things differently, you and I.

If I only payed attention to characters and plot, I wouldn't exactly call it 'immersion' in a fictional universe.
