Loved the whole scene set to the music used at Halo 2's E3 demo.

I would, as others have mentioned, like to see the beam be a lot more stationary, because right now it almost looks like the ship is just shining a big spotlight into a thunderstorm. Keep in mind that it doesn't have to be completely stationary, just dial it down.

It definitely needs more of a constant white-orange glow beneath the clouds, that gets more and more intense around the area that the beam is hitting. As the beam moves on, the glow cools a bit and becomes a steady, pulsating red-orange that remains there. Bonus points for steaming oceans, melting glaciers, the glow reflecting off of the underside of the ship and some (very) slight camera shaking.

I always pictured glassing being a ship slowly going over terrain with a beam, reducing a wide area beneath it into a molten state. (The beam itself doesn't have to hit every square inch.) And as it continued the surrounding surface areas (crust, buildings, etc.) would crumble and melt into the slag. Somewhat like what's happening here.

You're on the right track with the clouds and thunderstorms behind the mountains. That said, the clouds seem to be very low lying and you went a little overboard with the lightning effects. I would love to see some long-lasting, high-rising smoke columns rising from the area being glassed mixed in there (as Kraktoa so kindly demonstrates).

Hope this helps. :)
