It just struck me as so odd. Low angles would be used because they shorten the distance between the beam source and its target, so it would take less energy to achieve the same burn. Also consider applying a light layer of the same color as the beam, making it more intense as you get closer to the beam itself. I don't know if that's just my own preference, but it seems to me that something so energetically powerful should radiate a little bit. If you haven't thought about it, the cutscenes at the end of Floodgate in Halo 3 have a pretty good display of a controlled glassing burn.
