What : hardware do you have that does the capturing to a file externally? The one I posted a while ago, the USB HD-PVR by Hauppauge. All the encoding is done in the box and the compressed file streamed down the USB 2 cable to be saved to the laptops HDD. Has its drawbacks (component rather than HDMI), but overall its quite efficient. Overcomes the drawbacks of most laptops too.
