From what we've seen, I don't think the fate of the USA is meant to be a happy one. - The United Republic of North America is described as "a loose association of the nations of Canada and Mexico and the political remnants of the United States" - One of the Evolutions stories describes the Battle of Gettysburg as taking place during "the first American Civil War" - The "golden age of colonization" in which the Inner Colonies were established is described as "a time of plenty, optimism, and indolence unparalleled since second-century Rome or the financial bubble at the end of twentieth-century America," implying that the prosperity of 1990s America is a high point in history that wouldn't be reached again for centuries. My best guess: in the near future, probably in the late 22nd century in the instability following the wars of the 2160s, the United States suffered a second civil war that broke the country, eventually causing it to join with Canada and Mexico for support under the oversight of the nascent United Earth Government.
