From what I can see, Johnson and Keyes were purely fan-based reactions. Fans loved Johnson, so he was brought back to appease fans (Even though every time I watched that cutscene he was clearly infected). And him being ripped from Aliens always irked me.

Fans also loved CAPTAIN Keyes. He was very very very dead, so they resurrected him as his daughter, with a practically equivalent rank and zero personality.

Both characters were extremely pointless. The fact that all of the supporting cast (at least, the ones with squishy organs) died in Halo 1 added to the visceral feeling of the Chief being absolutely alone. A new and evolving cast would have a running commentary on just how painful war is. Not every statement has to be written on a banner - like the "We can so totally be friends" message of Halo 2.

As for the human connection - I agree that it is normally needed in a video game to keep players invested. However, the supporting cast of the Halo games have me wondering if Flood infection wouldn't be an improvement. At least then Johnson would stop talking, and Miranda might just make a logical decision.

I think these two characters stemmed from a lack of creativity on Bungie's part, and total shock that Halo 1 sold so well. They then missed what was so effective about Halo 1 - a simple, yet subtle story.

So they took success to mean "stereotypical black guy" + "tough-as-nails starship captain". And what the Hell is a "Lord" Hood, anyway? Tell me it's his first name, and not a military rank...

Riceatron, you shouldn't express your opinions to get attention, but rather to discuss them and hear others point of view. Just yelling "Brutes>Elites" to get noticed is rather wrong.

I'm also hoping that the term "Black" when referring to someone of African-American descent isn't offensive - here in Oz, I don't run into many Africans and the ones I know are oddly enlightened about that kind of thing. Hell, I call half my Phillipino friends "Asian" to annoy them :P
