Yeah. I suppose I might agree that the way Bungie presents the story is different than most games I've played...

But I personally think that's one of the aspects I enjoy the most and what makes me keep playing the campaigns today. I love the way Bungie tells the story with a simple layer of fun on top alongside a well of a story underneath it - this part being told through something like the Terminals but also in the little details, observations, in-game dialogue, even in the design of characters and environments. From every aspect, (ODST even had the loading screen giving us hints and foreshadows) we learn about the world we're playing in. I've found a lot of games don't do that. They may have fun story, a fun environment, a fun gun, but none of these things interact and support each other as much as the Halos do or other great games.
