What do you think of Johnson?

Did he bring anything to the story at all?

I honestly don't think he did.
He was a throwaway character in Halo 1, just another Sergeant next to Stacker.
He could die in the level Halo, in the first part where you meet him, and then show up again in the rock slide area.

We all assumed him and all the other marines died via flood.

But then at the beginning of Halo 2, he just suddenly walks out of the elevator with no explanation at all besides "Sorry, that's Classified'

We all agreed with Master Guns when he said 'My ass'

He then got shoved into First Strike, with a crap explanation about how he had Boren's Syndrome or how he was actually a Spartan-1

In Halo 2 he was really only there to say a few one liners and help out the Arbiter with Tartarus, which might have been the only important thing he did, even though Miranda could have done it just as well.
"We regret being alien bastards..."
"Don't shake the lightbulb"

He was just a stereotype taken from a movie with no real reason for being there besides "The fans liked him"

In Halo 3 he shows up at the beginning with The Arbiter, STILL with no explanation as to how he got there, says a few smart remarks, gets captured, says more smart remarks, and then dies.

If Johnson was taken out of Halo 2 and 3, we could have had a more fleshed out Miranda and actually been able to like her, but since all the spots with exposition she could have been in were taken by Johnson, we never had a chance to like her. So when she died in Halo 3, we were all "Okay."

Sure, Johnson had his moment in Contact Harvest, but that entire book was just Pro-Brute Propaganda and WOO JOHNSON ROMANCE to me, and while I like Brutes, as people around here know, I prefer them to be last resort measures.
My personal explanation for them not being in Halo 1 was that the Prophets didn't want them to destroy Halo because of how reckless they are in large numbers.

But thats beside the point.

What was the purpose of Johnson anyway according to the Story?
If we took him out, would it have made a difference?
