In Response To: I hope I'm not the first to say this... (stan)

: But the saxophone was brilliant. And I'm not joking.

: It matches the tone of the game at that point perfectly. I don't know if this
: is what Marty was going for, but when I play through this game I feel at
: times like I'm watching a good '80s sci-fi film. And when I say that, I
: mean the tone of the game, the atmosphere that the city exudes, reminds me
: a lot of the dark, gloomy, hopeless, fatalistic feel you find in movies
: like Blade Runner and Terminator and Escape from New York. And in that
: context, what's more appropriate than a soulful, melancholy sax solo?

Man, I LOVE the sax in ODST. I think it fits better than any other music from any other Halo game, no joke. Here's my attempt to explain why.

ODST (the Mombasa Street sections, anyway) felt really film noir to me. And, thinking back to old black-and-white noir movies about detectives, the sax is always prominent. That's one of the cliches. And ODST's Rookie sections did have a black-and-white tone. It was mostly made up of darks and whites, with contrast and shadow being the main scenery definitions. Add to that that ODST is a pretty much a detective story in a way. That sax REALLY hit me. Like, up until then, I was noting how cool the music was, but then the sax came in and it just blew me away. I think it was definitely harking back to old film noir detective stories, which is kind of what ODST is. The iconic scenes of the protagonist walking home under a street light in the rain with light sax music playing, that sort of thing. It was really beautiful.
