Battle of Mombasa - Longer than what we thought?
Posted By: CaptainTony <FieryHabaneros@gmail.com>Date: 9/6/09 4:33 p.m.

(The contents in the post contain very minor spoilers, none of which are taken from leaked footage of Halo 3: ODST, and are sourced by the link below)

http://xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/852871/bungie-project-2/videos/pax09_haloodst_spc_voiceover_090409.html

As most of you have already seen this video of ODST's cast from IGN.com, there was one little second that showed the most interesting part (other than Tricia Helfer). At approximately 0:45 seconds, Marty O'Donnell flips through the script of the game. In it, it shows that the game starts a little longer after than originally thought....and it reads:

OCTOBER 23, 2552
NEW MOMBASA, KENYA
SIX HOURS AFTER DROP

October 23rd, eh?

First shown in Halo 2 was a time marker indicating that the first invasion of Earth took place on October 20th, which we assumed the Battle of Mombasa only took place in a few short hours after the initial space battle during which the Prophet of Regret and his Assault Carrier began excavation operations in-and-around Voi.

Though this date that the script gives us makes quite a lot of sense, namely with the introduction of this new "ONI Candidate Assessment Program" viral campaign that was released only a couple days ago. In the campaign, it shows GySgt Buck interviewing three Marines who would later become the members of his team down in New Mombasa. Despite a massive Covenant force assaulting Earth, Buck is calm and relaxed, and actually tells about Regret's Carrier over the city.

Seeing as ODST begins at about 2:00pm on the 23rd (time clock on the loading screen right after the opening cinematic shows 20:14 or 8:24 in Military Time), John-117's and SgtMaj Johnson's attempted assault on the Carrier would have began early in the morning. Which means...the IAC was sitting above New Mombasa for nearly three days while the Carrier was just chillin'.

Kind of a waste to make a full explanation, but kind of a cool fact that you may all enjoy.

Cheers!
