In Response To: Play Halo 3: ODST Firefight This Saturday (Devin Olsen)

What strange event.

First of all, let me say that even though Bungie showed the address of the Gamestop for todays date, it was ACTUALLY the other Redmond Gamestop.

Second: That freaking truck was huge. Thirteen tons of matte black government steel sitting in the middle of an outdoor mall is just strange. It was kind of hard to really even know what was going on; there was a single canopy set up with "Halo 3 ODST" printed on the top, and it wasn't until about 4:00 that they started to put up banners around the truck.

The team passed around these really heavy-stock flyers with the controller layout on them, and Joseph Staten caroused the line with a box full of ODST pins. Not too long after that, a gentlemen pulled a Weta ODST helmet out of a backpack, and Joe got to run around with that, pleasing the fans. I'm a huge fan of the ODST helmet, and getting to shove it onto my head was pretty thrilling.

It was a long day of standing around, but we finally got our chance to head into the truck at about 4:15 (we didn't get there until about 1). We got to sit insde the truck and watch as 4 others on our side played through a round on Alpha site: Ten minutes with unlimited lives. When our turn came up, we chose Crater, and jumped in. Bungie encouraged us to help ourselves with changing the controller settings, but they made it clear that they did NOT want any character settings changed (one man was almost asked to leave).

Ten minutes was an excellent amount of time to play. We had plenty of time to get used to the layout of the map, the feel of the weapons, the new visor system, and even got in touch with our own, rather frail mortality. You can really feel more of a push when your weapons discharge; it's definitely not as easy to aim and spray. The visor system was really cool; it was a nighttime map, and turning on the enhancement system not only outlined all the enemies in red (which was AWESOME), but it really lit up the whole map. Being able to zoom again with the pistol was much more of a joy than I expected, too.

Our team ended up doing pretty well; I think we totaled something like four or five deaths between us four, and got about 28000 points total. Bungie gave out a set of Halo Wars McFarlane minis to the points leader of every round, and I ended up scoring over half of our points, so I got to walk away with a good little prize.

Great day.
