In Response To: Re: Brute Obsession? (Leviathan) : I personally don't think we'll be fighting Elites, but it really could go : either way in regards to the story. We just don't know enough about what : happened after Chief left Earth. Based on the trailer though, the events of ODST happen less then a day after Regret left Earth. That makes it extremely likely Elites will be present, and as far as we know they had not been betrayed yet. Who knows when the 'Great Schism' actually occurs in whatever time frame ODST will cover. Remember too, speculation is further complicated by the effect slipspace has on the passage of time. Who knows how long Chief and pals were hanging out on the way to Delta Halo and back? Battles leading up to Halo 3 could have lasted weeks or even months.
