In Response To: Hopefully helping with the understanding: (Ragnarok) The theory that Neloms posted back in July makes sense and flows consistently, and it would fit the story line. However, to be honest, I utterly despise this theory. If Bungie decides to shoehorn this into the story, I will be extremely disappointed. In fact, given the importance of the fan community to Bungie, it wouldn't surprise me if they take ideas and story elements from things posted from the fans. After all, in the Halo Bible project forum, Avateur asked Bungie about the Legendary Ending, and they told him that they like to do things without properly planning it out, and they had devoted no thought to it at the time. Here is the link:http://halobible.bungie.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22 Now for why I would hate this, is that Bungie resorts to time travel to explain this interaction between John-117 and 343 GS and blow it up to be this big part of the Halo story. If I haven't forgotten, isn't the main purpose of the Halo story the struggling Human race trying to defeat the Covenant? True, the endeavor to shut down the Halo Array and defeat the Flood is a big part of it, but at the end of the day, isn't it mainly about stopping the Covenant? Why suddenly shift the focus off of the war against the Covenant? Besides, all this time tavel speculation has been a constant theme around HBO for quite a long time, and I am impressed with how long it has endured, with newer and newer justifications for it. Who knows; maybe Bungie has no answer to this story problem and the plot of hole where Cortana and John reside, sees this theory and decided "hey! This is a cool theory; lets use it!" And presto, you have MC and Cortana going to past to the Forerunner, fight the Flood, activate the Rings, all this being his "future", all to have a pointless conversation with 343 GS, who relates it to MC's "past", and gets killed. We have a pointless, endlessly repeating time loop. If this true, that means that everything the Forerunner and the Humans have done against the Flood and later the Covenant is all for nothing. Every sacrifice, hard decision, and overall heroism is rendered worthless. What's the point of all this time travel if everything you do automatically fails? This theory would render the themes of heroism in this story irrelevant. What's more important; the message of heroism in the face of horrific odds and saving the innocent, or ridiculous and contrived time travel nonsense just to justify some worthless little conversation between a soldier and talking lightbulb? You pick which.
