Hopefully helping with the understanding:

I never understood the ambiguity of the Master Chief-Guilty Spark relationship, as to whether or not they had previous contact.

Totally speculating: I would say that GS has the ability to scan through MC's armor and see the man underneath. He therefore couldn't mistake MC for another individual donning similar armor. Even then, GS identified MC's armor as inferior to what he would have expected of a reclaimer.

If you noticed, I also assume GS has the ability to discern individual humans, as in treating Johnson, Miranda and MC as persons, otherwise GS shows signs of Autism or something similar. That basic ability of any human intelligence or higher negates any possibility that when GS refers to MS as "you" he refers to the human race. Think about it: If Bill wrongs you, you're not going to assume every other man is going to wrong you the same way (unless you have some kind of psychosis which GS (and some women) may have, but that's a different discussion).

So assuming GS can identify MC as an individual and he meant "you" as MC himself, the question is "why," or maybe more accurately, "how."

The "how" started this thread, and I think Neloms presents a strong and highly interesting case.

Combining some thoughts presented in this thread:
The individual GS -who may have been a flesh and blood Forerunner before- encountered and other wise collaborated with MC in the distant past.
That MC, older than the MC in the Halo games (because his life continued, just happening in the past), died thousands of years ago. Maybe from old age, maybe in combat or maybe as a sacrifice to stop the Flood for the first (his second) time.
So that MC as an individual ceases to exist, but GS continues on as an artificial entity or as an organic entity transfered into an artificial object as suggested before (not by me). THAT individual, GS, re-encounters and re-collaborates with MC in the Halo games. GS doesn't cast a blanket of logic, assuming MC someone familiar because of his armor, but because he KNOWS him as a unique person.

Again, most of the stuff here I got from you guys and don't mean to take credit unduly. I tried to clarify more than anything else.
