tl;dr for the rest of this thread. Sorry, but it's been a long time since I posted here and I notice I'm essentially bumping back this old thread.

One thing that makes me think that Chief did go back in time- apart from the fact that Spark recognizes him- is that the Covenant AI found in First Strike resembled Cortana, only copied again and again and with defects induced by multiple copying. No explanation is given for why something copied from Cortana should exist in that timeframe.

It also raises the possibility that some of Cortana's programming went back to the past- and perhaps the effects of Cortana's rampancy got to be felt all the way in the past rather than in the future? If any of the not-too-good sections of code were adapted into Forerunner AIs, there would be significant issues, so as to speak.
