Legendary is HARD - Xbox Unleashed Experiences
Posted By: jeremedia <j@jeremedia.com>Date: 11/4/01 3:33 p.m.

Played the three 15 minute shifts of Legendary Halo last night at the Xbox Unleashed event at Universal City. I never even looked at the other games to be honest... and was glad the other people did, as it let me get the same Xbox station all three times, and thus use my saved character and game.

-- below is my game-play experience, so some spoilers, but nothing not in the various movies of fighting on the ship (except I was playing Legendary) --

I started from the beginning, and didn't try to skip the intro. The detail is SO much higher than we have been seeing in the various clips. The PoA looks very good, and all the screens on the deck are legible. When it got to the part were the "hushed casket" is unsealed, I was surprised that the control and movement introduction was skipped. Master Chief jumped out of the casket and the scene cut to the assistant telling me we had better run. So, I made my way to the bridge, trying to learn how to duck and jump (you have to do both to make it over pipes and half-closed blast doors ). Maybe there is a setting for this, but there is no head-bob when you walked. I hope there is, as simply gliding the camera around feels very... artificial.

So you make it to the bridge, talk with the captain, get Cortana, and are told to get off the ship. As soon as you get off the bridge, the handgun is pulled out. There is a couple of brief skirmishes, and then a checkpoint at the entrance to the cafeteria. This is where I became firmly stuck.

There are a three marines already fighting when you enter, and a dead marine's rifle is kindly placed on the ground right inside the door. Ahead of you are two Elite and a grunt. The grunt is tossing plasma grenades, one of which normally gets stuck to a marine, but not always. I was never able to save the the three initial marines, and they were never ever to kill any of the three initial Covenant.

After I died a couple of times charging them, as they stuck to their corner of the room, I learned to pop out, get a few shots in them, take a few shots, hide and wait for my shields to recharge. It took it seems 4-5 shots to deplete the shields and begin taking health damage. I then noticed that as soon as I killed the grunt, a blast door behind their position would open, and a few marines would attack the remaining two Elites from behind. This gave me a chance to move in and empty a clip in each Elite, which seemed to do the trick. By my third and final 15 minutes of play, I could get this far without health loss, and keep at least two of the new marines from being slaughtered (they died primarily from the Elite's "flying elbow" melee attack)

The aftermath of this initial battle leaves at least one plasma rifle behind and usually a few fragmentation and plasma grenades, depending on how fast the initial grunt was killed. None of these, however, was enough to get me through the rest of the room. As soon as the initial three Covs are killed, a second, much larger wave rushes the room form entrances I am guessing are the exits to the cafeteria. It seemed to be at least four Elites and four to five grunts. The closest I ever came to getting through them involved me luckily sticking a plasma grenade to a grunt who ran back into his comrades, taking out himself and a few others. I ran out of time trying to pistol-scope-kill the remaining few Elites, who were hiding behind various supports and tables.

Overall, very, very fun, and very, very challenging. It would have been more satisfying with a keyboard and mouse, especially for so much precision gunplay, but its not something that is going to stop me from buying Halo and the Halo hardware.

btw, the Xbox promotional style is so absolute cheese. I felt bad for the people running the event, all dressed up in Xbox-Hip-Trendy-Cyber-Guy-And-Babe outfits. They just looked goofy and sad. :( I hope they got paid well.
