xbox unleashed (or "hell looks a lot like LA")
Posted By: op_ivyDate: 11/2/01 11:53 p.m.

well, i just got back from universal city or xbox unleashed. i hate LA. the traffic sucks, and people drive like asses.

this post is long and for the most part spoiler free (cant say the same for gramatical errors or spelling errors however).

xbox unleashed was set up much differently then i expected. i figured it would be like e3 in that you could freely go where ever you pleased and play any game that was open. it was not. basically they had two lines, one for people who were going to enter the tournament and one for "free play". well, i could care less for dead or alive or cel damage (the games featured in the tournament), so i went for freeplay. i stood in a line outside for like 30-35 min with absolutely nothing to keep me occupied except for "geek watching" (you know, the guys dressed in black and green with fold out chairs). no moniters showing xbox footage, not even a clear view of the kiosks.

when they finally let me and about 20 others in, i immediatly headed for halo. i selected single player, first stage (aboard the PoA). as the level was loading, i noticed the guy next to me was playing a level i had never seen before (forest or swamp, not to sure. big trees and fog. i think it was the same level shown in the new OXM pics). i decided not to watch him though, because i didnt want to spoil stuff i had never seen before (i figure its okay to spoil the PoA level and the crash landing level, i've already see plenty of those).

so the game loads up with the cut scenes. i skipped them and went straight to the game.

minor spoiler*
yes, when you are awoken inside the cyro-tube you can look down and see your body! nice.
when riding shotgun, you get a nice view of the interior of the jeep.
end spoiler*

the game is beautiful, but you all know that. turn on your flash light, and you see all sorts of crazy detail. amazing lighting effects.

the controls were very hard to get used to at first. i havent played many fps on a pad before, and unlike golden eye, halo is much more fast paced and looking up and down is much more important. by the end of the night (about an hour or so of playing) i was fairly comfortable with them, and am sure that it would take much longer to be second nature.

as far as sound and music go, what i could hear sounded great. i purposely tried to not listen to cortana, or other soilders/enemies to not spoil the game for me when i get it on the 15th. what was particularly impressive to me was in one specific battle i was involved with an elite. we were circling around a large rock, trying to nail each other, when all of a sudden the music changed to a very dramatic medley. the music changed to fit my individual encounter. very very cool.

some cool things that occured in the game... once, on the PoA, i fired off all my ammo at an elite, only to have him survive when i ran out of ammo. he then began to rush me for a melee attack, and my only choice was to run backwards while re-loading. just as he was about to connect with a surely deadly blow, i was able to finish reloading and empty a second clip into him, at point blank range... its so satisfing to shoot down a wraith as it makes a run at you, and to see the flaming wreckage nearly crash on top of you... melee attacks on unsuspecting, or even fleeing grunts is way to amusing...

i played the first two levels several times, single and coop, and got to try out a few deathmatch levels as well (only 2 player). the vehicles are a little difficult to drive (especially the tank). i rolled the jeep a few times as well. each time i was able to get to play the games, i kept telling myself that i was gonna try something other then halo. its funny, but thats the only game i played.

as a side note, everyone seemed really impressed with the xbox, and even more so with ahlo. it was a blast.

any questions? i'll be happy to answer them.
