I'm not thrilled with the two-tier system either... but I understand (firsthand) that it costs money to run a website, and the costs of running a website as big as IGN are HUGE. The advertising market has dried up - lots of gaming sites have gone under. IGN chose to offer some of its best stuff to those willing to pay for it - if that keeps them online, cool. Lowtax said it pretty well - go read the front message on the Something Awful forums for some down-to-earth practicalities. (FWIW - bungie.org does about 10% of the traffic of Something Awful - so our costs are considerably lower.) : PS. holy crap... 75000 messages and MINE is the one that gets edited... Heh - I've deleted a few ... but 1) this had been up for 6 hours by the time I got to it, and 2) I felt I needed to make it clear that I couldn't allow that here - simply deleting your post would have gotten someone else to post it instead. The bright side - this info (and LOTS more) will be known to everybody who wants to know it in 2 weeks. :)
