One word: Easter Eggs.

Everyone likes to put references to their past work in new ones. Bungie is one of them.

And the Mjolnir Mark IV cyborg did not have Durandal in his head, neither does the SPARTAN Mark V. Durandal communicated from the ship through terminals, and Cortana is loaded onto a "credit-card sized device" that the player wears.

The only thing I can seem to see is that they're both mythical swords of power.

The game can very well take place in the same universe - but any speculation as to whether this is "Marathon 3" is premature.
