Attention Grabbing vs Communicating Message

Ok, so the commercial to me was rather lame. I mean, its the whole 'lets advertise like Infinity did, Cingular and Apple circa 1984' * didnt really work before as a mass market ad. Ads like that for an electronic device are rather ambiguous. Most of america/canada doesnt even know the xbox exists. They dont know its a gaming system. For all they know its a new Aiawa stereo system or Nokia Cell Phone or nVidia Card.

I didn't find the commercials engaging enough to wonder what the hell 11.8.01 was, in other words why do I even care enough to pay attention to this date? I mean had there been action taken in the shots, some horrible carnage (muffled shots of the game, noises or carnage, shaken cameras) sure, then I'd pay attention because I'd wonder what the hell was up. You'd at least know what the hell you were waiting for (some action). Show an empty shelf space next to a bunch of PS2s and say something like "reserved for 11.08.01". At least give some sort of reference to industry. Also the whole "we are going to revolutionize the industry", "we will elminiate the past" schtick has been over done - its passe - lets hope its not their next set of commercials. (They need something like "everyone revolutionizes an industry - we just own them".)

I'd rather see kick ass action commercials. Since the game system was touted as the gamers choice for hard core, damnit, show me some fucking hard core action. Show me the money shots! I want a close up of the cyborg from HALO and you can see some horrific battle in the reflection of his helmet and a voice over that says "On November 8th, Its Your Turn".

Most of the American/Canadian public arent smart enough to grasp the cockroach ad. I mean simple MacDonalds adds for a 2.99 cheeseburger have better communicative effectiveness. Not to mention the whole "old person conspiracy" image either reminds us of total oppression (could they be saying the gaming industry has oppressed its masses til now?) or a Marilyn Manson does all our music (bless his heart, he rocks but hes a tad culturally passe) or Dark City (is it a new movie coming out?).

You can be guarenteed Nintendos commercials will consist of cartoon characters and shots of games or people at least smiling. Playstation 2 had best get their asses up and flood the airwaves with new announcements of games and their much anticipated netplay feature.

They need Eminem as a spokesperson. (Most) Males 18-24 really dig/identify with him - not film noir. Oh and some shots of games or people playing games or something related to the industry. Definitely green, definitely.

* The Apple HAL ads are avant garde but they appealed to a small niche of people, not a mass market and were to evoke memories of a past known thing (2001). They also did not run over and over and over again. It was not the kicker to a campaign. The Rip. Mix. Burn. Dig commercials were their more mass appeal one, or the imac colors. Simple, effective, got the consumer geared up for the product.
