Transcendent by Stephen Baxter? I'm reading it right now, and it totally gets into all this collective-mind business. It's pretty interesting. I haven't read sci-fi in probably five years. A lot of it is kind of silly, but it's fun. And since it deals in part with the effects of Global Warming in the near future, and presents a society dealing with the very real Warming, as they call it, it's pretty interesting and sobering.
