In this smaller, crappier version, that motion blur doesn't come off as well, I think, and makes the figure and the negative space too contrasted, and maybe that's where you get the feeling he doesn't belong. It might also be the lighting/ shadows as you stated. Here's the original screenshot:

Just darkened and changed the contrast for this one. I think I just found a good angle, and cropped off the sides to give it that empty / airy feeling which is what I was going for. Again, the original shot:
