I like being able to look up the : people I played against. : And I say this as someone with a 0.9 K/D ratio and a top skill of 4. :) I personally agree as well, but I think the argument that people should have the option to opt out is not without merit. For people new to Halo, it can be disheartening to go into a couple of Lone Wolves matches and get stomped by people who haven't ascended up the ranks yet, only to go to your stats page and see that really anyone can take one glance and say you are terrible at the game. I don't believe that by and large most people look up gamertags at random and make commentary about the player based on their stats, but the possibility of it happening can be daunting to some. Being able to opt out of the stat tracking might be a "newbie-friendly" move that could help Halo 3 attract more online players. That said, I think opting out should not be without cost. If people can't look at your stats, they shouldn't be able to see yours either, and I think it would also be fair to turn off the military rank progression too.
