In Response To: Dreadful Grinding Noise - Xbox 360 Disc Drive *OT* (The Se7enth Prophet) : After watching two DVDs yesterday (Little Miss Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later, : in that order, if it makes ANY difference AT ALL, which I doubt), my Xbox : 360 malfunctioned. I placed in the disc tray The Orange Box to play some : Portal, and to my unfortunate surprise was greeted with a "Play : DVD" on the dashboard. I immediately ejected the disc and then : reinserted it. Still, "Play DVD". Well, with my hopes high, I : pressed play DVD. This is what I got: "This is an Xbox 360 game disc. : To play this disc, place it in an Xbox 360 gaming system" (or : something similar) followed by the same message in what seemed like twenty : languages. This happens to me, too. It happened for the first time the first time I tried to play Halo 3. My temporary solution: Use the console horizontally. After inserting a disc, press gently on the top of the 360 logo on top of the console. This seems to lessen the appearance of the "Insert this disc into a 360 console"-- that's basically the DVD track Microsoft put on there in case some moron put a 360 game in a DVD player and expected it to work. As with many good things companies try to do in order to help out the idiots among us, this one backfires: when a drive starts to have problems it finds the DVD track first and ignores the game tracks. : Well, I restarted the system with the disc out of the tray. I got the
One or two times out of fifty I also hear a loud grinding noise. It doesn't appear to harm the disc, either. If your console is still under warranty I'd have it replaced or repaired, though. For me that is impractical, otherwise I'd also be doing it. : Later yesterday, I decided to play some Halo 2 with a friend who can't afford
Old games don't seem to cause the problem. Neither do DVD movies. After happening the first time, the error recurred on Halo 3, Bioshock, and Gears of War. Halo 2, Half-Life 2, and all the other Xbox 1 games I tried did not. : Today, after returning from school, I decide I want to play Halo 3. To my
: Does anyone have any idea what is causing this terrible, terrible noise? My
I'd not use the console vertically. And of course never, ever move or reposition it while it is on, or while there is a disc in the drive.
