DC and Marvel have done this for years...even before that, you could have just counted on it releasing a collection for anything that sold well. Also, it's really the only way comics are usually reprinted. Books get new editions and reprints all the time, but its hard to find many single issue reprints of comics. It's almost just part of the medium.
