In Response To: Initial Bungie/Microsoft Agreement Theory (prometheus) : I wouldn't say this is a conspiracy theory per se, but it is interesting. : Bungie was acquired by Microsoft in 2000 for an undisclosed amount of money. : No details of the agreement were ever really made public. Is it possible : that the agreement basically stated Microsoft would own Bungie for the : duration of the pre-determined trilogy before releasing it again into the : wild upon its completion? : I'm not saying I agree with this theory, but think about it. Perhaps the most : telling piece of evidence were the number of Halo 2/Halo 3 related gaffs : before the two respective games were announced. The most famous being : Steve Ballmer's quote in October, 2003 where he said "we're working : on the next version of Xbox right now and we're working on Halo 2 and Halo : 3, the two newest versions of the game." Halo 2 was still in : production at the time and Halo 3 wasn't even on the horizon. : I can't really think of a good reason besides an agreement such as this that : Microsoft would let Bungie go. I mean, the games alone sold nearly a : billion dollars (and still climbing), and I won't even get into how many : new Xboxes/360s the trilogy sold. Why let their biggest cashcow go out to : pasture now? "starting immediately, Bungie will become an independent company and will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for “Halo” titles" The Halo titles will still be a Microsoft Game Studios deal, so Microsoft didn't let their biggest cashcow get away. They let Bungie go without letting Halo go. It's really not a bad situation for Microsoft, and it's great for Bungie, I think...
