In Response To: Re: GamesRadar Halo 3 Q&A (Snave)

: "The Halo modding community managed to find a lot of hidden data in the
: Beta code, how come it was so straightforward to access and why was the
: information in there in the first place, given that it was pretty obvious
: someone would find it?
: I wouldn’t necessarily agree that anything was “so straightforward” to access
: – keep in mind these people are using customized hardware that has been
: modified for the sole purpose of bypassing security and signing mechanics
: that are required for retail games. Sometimes out of harmless curiosity,
: many other times for more devious purposes. I wouldn’t read too much into
: any information that people allegedly found buried in the Beta code –
: anything and everything can and will change and some of those items were
: still relics from last year. Scrubbing out every possible line of code for
: a few people who may have the means to extract it wasn’t something we were
: able to make a priority and still get the Beta out on time and keep our
: schedule moving for the final game. And at the end of the day, it was fun
: to see the Halo community getting into a frenzy. In that regards, you
: might even wonder if some of that code was left in there intentionally…
: hmmm…"

: You see, this kind of negative press really does shit all over the halo
: modding community. Modders did find things in the map file, but they
: didn't release anything, it was thanks to selfless individuals that this
: information was leaked to gaming blogs etc with the impression that
: modders had some how 'hacked/cracked' the map files.. In reality any
: person with access to a hex editor could simply view or search for certain
: strings, and a list would come up.. GRRRRRRRR. (Frankie means software
: btw)

: GamesRadar really needs to inform itself

So do you.

That was Sketch, not Frankie.

"Anbody with a hex editor" - yeah, and a modded Xbox that lets you grab the files off the drive. Let's not forget that little piece.

There's no shitting here; he states pretty clearly that some people look for this information out of curiosity, and some people are doing it for more nefarious reasons. Would you disagree with that statement? Is it in any way not true?
