In Response To: halo.bungie.org and Friends and Family Beta (Miguel Chavez)
: Who remembers the QUESTION? Did you get the ANSWER?
: So did HBO help get folks in the Friends and Family Halo 3 Beta? Yep. A few
: weeks ago we were asked to submit names to F&F with the following strict
: proviso: we couldn't make it blatant. We couldn't just flatly state
: "Wanna get in F&F, sign up HERE!" We immediately realized there
: were small groups of folks that were a great source for entries: the
: different 'arms' of HBO: IBO, CBO, previous Clan associations, etc. We
: even threw in folks from previous LAN parties we hosted. It didn't matter
: if they had a 360, or even XBL. We'd get them an invite and they could
: take it from there.
: We wanted to somehow get folks from the forum who weren't just 'regulars'.
: But how? We couldn't announce it, we couldn't solicit. So I tried to come
: up with a cute way of capturing your attention if you were a forum reader
: (lurker or otherwise) and "fooling" you into submitting your
: email addy. A ploy that would - if you were so inclined - get you to click
: on my email address and write back to me. You could write ANYTHING back to
: me. Just your act of emailing me got you on the list. So I came up with
: some questions. But they were all red herrings. Yah, you could 'answer
: them' but I didn't care. What was the *real* question? Did you figure it
: out? It was simply "What's your name and email address?"
: A good handful of you did reply. And apparently it was enticing enough that
: even folks associated with Bungie were writing in - trying to figure out
: what I was getting at with all those cryptic posts. heh. Even if you were
: stumped by the trivia questions, google could've helped you out (how do
: you think I pulled up a bunch of them?). Some of you sent in really
: detailed answers to all the questions. I applaud you for taking the time
: and energy to do that. I feel a little guilty that I couldn't offer you
: anything more than if someone had just emailed me "Hey, what's going
: on?" Regardless, for those of you that were willing to click on the
: email addy, I'm glad I was able to help get you into F&F!
: Some folks have asked what exactly the answers were to the questions, so here
: they are, in no particular order: Who remembers the dwarf, ambling around
: the jeep on the top of Silent Cartographer?
: This refers to the Randy Glass video, Warthog Revisited , one of the
: earliest successful forms of Halo machinima. And I do believe it still
: holds up!
: Who remembers once I was free and free I shall be once again?
: This refers to Enkidu . An especially elaborate bit of Fan Fiction from the
: mind of our own forum regular, Anton P. Nym. In order for it to work, it
: had to be merged into the day to day routine of forum posts. HBO was happy
: to oblige such a compelling piece of work.
: Who remembers the dude that lost his car?
: Another forum regular (well, not so regular nowadays, but back then he was! I
: belive IBO is sucking his life energy at the moment) Vector40 wrote a
: long essay of his (mis)adventures in LA trying to make it to a Bungie
: Fanfest. Before his story, mnemesis's embarrassing cell phone fiasco
: would've taken top honors for fanfest embarrassment.
: Who remembers the banner that wasn't a banner?
: BOLL, another forum freak-azoid, is a master of mashing FLASH wizardry with
: Halo culture. Never read his posts unless you're also clicking all over
: his message window.
: Who remembers Click?
: How do you tag a forum moron that just won't give up? Better if I just show
: you. ;)
: Who remembers the front page?
: Looking at the tufts of hair Louis Wu leaves around his keyboard, apparently
: not enough of us! A typical lament here on the forum from Mr. Wu directed
: at you folks that would post 'news,' ignoring that the front page had
: posted about it hours if not days before.
: Who remembers Soon™?
: Bungie's 'get out of jail free' card. "You want X, Y, and Z?
: Soon™!"
: Who remembers Brian?
: Brian Morden, a hero in many of our eyes.
: Who remembers falling face first into the snow, then looking back and seeing
: the den?
: Skav, apparently. :) Another one of his behemoth 'stories' that would
: captivate the forum from time to time.
: Who remembers the basis for a lagrange point threshold?
: This is a just a mash-up of three astronomical items in the Halo Universe.
: Planet, moon, and gravitional stellar-body formula.
: Who remembers when the jeep was built Ford Tough?
: Another early example of Halo machinima, from the fine folks at Renegade
: Theater (yes, we used his stuff twice - the man is prolific!)
: Who remembers the marines running around screaming with needlers in them?
: The tireless Captain Spark exacts his revenge after years of painstakingly
: recording all the Halo 1 & 2 dialogue - by torturing the poor marines
: . :)
: Who remembers gnat? DeAdLy_cOoKiE? KORHAL (version 1.0)?
: Search the forum for these past members, and you'll remember them for being
: on our bad side most of the time. The years have given us a more mature
: KORHAL but as for the others? Haven't a clue!
: Does she hum while you're asleep?
: This was an early question, and demonstrates that I was still experimenting
: with different types of questions. This has no real answer at all: it's
: merely posed to you, as the Master Chief, being asked if Cortana hums
: while you're trying to catch some shuteye.
: Here are some others that were in the same vein: What does hot plasma mixed
: with Elite entrails smell like?
: Why was there never time to put your hands down?
: Did those arrows on the floor really help?
: Why doesn't the air fall off the edge?
: I might as well show you the rest of the questions I had but never got around
: to using. One was too obvious, one was another machinima mention which I
: was getting tired of, and one is obscure and pretty funny if you've been
: around long enough. I'm talking pre-Halo Bungie days.
: Who remembers a Hunter helping the MC land across the map room in Silent
: Cartographer?
: Who remembers the piano music on the snowy metal structures by your Banshee?
: Who remembers the ass on the keyboard?
: Well, back to regular business. Move along folks. ;)

And all I needed to do was send an email, when I thought it was more a first come first serve basis when it came to answering those questions. Another reason to add shit on on this already shitty week. And it's bloody monday, I knew listening to that "tell me why I don't like monday" song would come back and kick me in the ass.
