They mean the same sort of : thing, right? I suppose so. Do you hear the boy say 'Cass'? It sounds like a background noise or music. It certainly isn't the pinched sound of his voice in the helmet. Its echo-y, kind of all around, though I'm not listening on a surround system, just phones. We've seen his hand against the sky and he's turning to the helmet prior to picking it up. The marines on the radio are distant, the low frequencies are missing, the boy in the helmet is distant. But when he says 'Cass' his voice is rich and close, so you're not listening for the same kind of things that you listen for to hear the marines. I didn't hear the 'Cass' before because I was tuning it out to hear the other stuff. You'll have to do the opposite to hear it. But its obvious when you do hear it.
