Yes, it does pick up... though the sex remains grating throughout, and one major revelation does (in hindsight) look a bit silly. One, however, doesn't read Ringworld for the characters (the sequels are better in that regard) but for the big, honkin' artifact and the sense of wonder that comes from exploring it. That's the good part. -- Steve also enjoyed the "Fleet of Worlds" idea, for all it's manifold alienness.
