: Coaxke swore me to secrecy at one point, but after he spent like 6 hours
: working on it he said "fuck it it's such a pain in the ass that other

: create a mask that he used to lighten the binocular area. You can see
: fragments because it doesn't work perfectly, but it gets rid of the hud.
: Finding shots was a pain in the ass, it was like shooting the whole video

It was more like 2 hours. :P

Basically, the challenge is coming up with a mask that compensates for the scope darkness at the right "curve," and then finding image adjustment settings that work as consistently as possible. There are some issues that come up when the darkness brings color saturation down to zero. That's why bright scenes have a more appearant edge.

Final Cut Pro made it easy to manage, though. You can create a sequence you throw all of your footage into, then use two instances of that into a new sequence where the actual processing takes place. You use that mask as an alpha matte on the top-most version and then apply your color correction settings.

It takes a little trial and error, and it's not worth it unless you really want to do your movie in 4:3, which was nessecary for us what with all the captions, Photoshops, etc. Also, coming up with an accurate mask is a little tricky, but not too tricky. I'll leave that up to you to figure out.

All you movie-makers are using Final Cut Pro... right? Heh.
