Don't give me that about half-life. Gordon Freeman was a mute. It was the name of you, the player. He had no personality on his own. It's supposed to make you feel like you are there yourself, rather than controling a character on a screen.

Deus Ex was pretty much the same way, but at least JC Denton talked (in a rather monotone voice). I'm not saying there isn't a story, what I'm saying is that none of these games really have a real lead character. The lead character is always you the player.
