Grady's last suggestion, that the sword shape is a symbol of power, is the one that gets my vote (sorry, Walshicus), since it's the one I'd settled on myself - in other words, the swords are made in the shape of an important symbol, rather than vice versa (though there might well be some technological crossover, too). The symbol itself is hard to interpret visually as anything other than a stylised flame. In this image, it looks to me as if the flame/sword represents the power source of the 'blue beam'. So this tablet shows the prophets discovering and harnessing the power source of the installation, and sharing this knowledge (and the power it represents) with the Elites. The flame/sword symbol also appears on the main door of the Hierarchs' Sanctum in High Charity, reinforcing its association with the concept of power (political power, in this case). I think I may have seen it in other places in the game (apart from the swords), which might be useful in confirming or refuting this theory. Regarding the relative sizes of Prophets and Elites, as I pointed out in discussion of the third tablet, several human artistic traditions use the relative sizes of figures to show relative status. So it's a good bet that this simply shows that Prophets consider themselves more important than Elites (no surprises there). Those repeated shapes down the edges certainly are intriguing, though I don't have a clue at the moment as to what they represent. I strongly suspect that they are meaningful, rather than abstract decoration. |
