We think the Covenant were at Sigma Octanus to look for the artifact containing the maps to the Alpha Halo and the "holy light". Maybe the Engineers were under special orders to thoroughly search every human structure.

I'm sure there's still a link, but other people have already presented the evidence for it. Anyway, I'll know better after I read the article, and then the update, and then play Halo 2 in the fall.
