It could mean LOCAL Auxillary Processing Unit, but that's just a guess.

No offense intended, but in harsh environments, especially cold ones, you don't just stand there and survive. It takes work to make a situation survivable, sometimes upwards of a day or more. As the number of people who need to survive increases, the time required increases. Add into the picture a need to treat wounded and time required to repair electronic systems (only AFTER the essentials are taken care of, of course), and you can easily have 72 hours burned up.

But I have a question for you: what have the Lebanon and her crew been up to? If she's in orbit of Frigid, why is our protagonist still up there, when she/he/it had originally been ordered to go planetside with the Pelicans, and why is she/he/it still in the cryobay?

I think someone else posted this, but my understanding is that a "handshake" is, in electronics/software terms, something akin to saying "hello" to someone. If they respond, you start a conversation (or try to), except that (depending on the software and hardware) you might occasionally repeat your "hello" if the other person doesn't respond.

A handshake signal is, in other words, a piece of software saying, "I'm here, and I know you're there! Want to exchange data?"

Hmmm... this poses a question, however: Is Enkidu a "smart" AI?
